St. Anthony's Parish

By 1914, the villages of Apple Hill and Monkland with their surrounding areas had become thriving communities but they were faced with many difficulties and hardships. One of the greatest of these was the fact that there was no Catholic Church which these God-believing people could attend easily. Read more...

St. Raphael's Ruins

In 1970 a fire consumed the church of St. Raphael's, one of the earliest Roman Catholic churches in English-speaking Canada. Fortunately the outer walls were spared and today its impressive scale and fine masonry work continue to attract the tourists to the site. The Ruins were declared a National Historic Site in 1999. St. Anthony's Parish, Apple Hill, Ontario...

Just as the sun was beginning to set behind the Parish, I found the marker's that years ago I assumed were those of my grandmother's family.

That's when my camera batteries gave out...
One tricky bit about road-trips is remembering to charge your batteries. Luckily there was a variety-store across the street.

From what I can read...

Archibald MacDonald
Died April 30th, 1917,
Aged 87 years

Catherine R.
Died June 3, 1936
R.I.P.

That would be Baldie and Sarah's daughter Cassie (Catherine Rachael) b.188? d.193? Never married.

Where is Annie buried? The records state she was brought back to Glengarry from Winnipeg.

Right beside the Archibald MacDonald memorial, is another MacDonald. There are two markers to this site. The name on the left is Grant. The marker on the right appears to include the name Catherine Margaret MacDonald - 1888? - 1943.

I had always thought that they were also relatives because this pair of headstones are right beside Archibald and Cassie, but now I'm not so sure. Just curious... Cousins maybe?

For those of you heading to Glengarry. The position in the cemetary is front and centre. Look carefully, you can miss it!

I wish now that I had gone to the St. Finnan's Cemetary in Alexandria. I don't think I have ever been there. That would be where to look for records before St. Anthony's was built in 1914.

And of course St. Raphael's. I never knew that Ranald MacIsaac MacDonald 1754-1859 and Janet Cameron 1783-1863 were buried there. They would be interesting to look for. Janet was the young one that got married at age 14 in Scotland. Had 8 children there and 7 of them moved to Canada, one to Australia.
