Remember seeing this volume on your childhood bookshelf? To check it out of the Charlottetown library, the librarian had to travel down into the archives. The cellar. Ralph Conner hadn't been checked out since 1955! Read more...

  the running journal posts:

Ranald MacIsaac MacDonald 1754-1859 and Janet Cameron 1783-1863.

Married 1797 in Scotland, Ranald and Janet had 8 children, then emigrated to Canada in 1831 (or so...).

StRaphaelsMacDonalds One source refers to them both being buried at St. Raphaels West, however the cemetary has suffered damage over the years and we haven't been able to confirm this.

Word of advice. If you are up to exploring the cemetary be sure to have a list of dates with you. Birth, Death and Marriage where you can. It is not enough to just remember the names!

Just click on the photo to zoom in and see why...

As the family legend goes, they were employed in Scotland by good farmers but left because of the threat of tuberculosis. They paid their own passage and said with pride "No one had to bring us over". The name is MacDonald (clan Ranald) spelled with a capital D.

A note on the aside. The threat of tuberculosis can still be witnessed on old time farms here in the new country. "Oh that shed out back. It's originally a TB House. Yup, built along time ago. When a family member had TB, they had to stay out there."
