Remember seeing this volume on your childhood bookshelf? To check it out of the Charlottetown library, the librarian had to travel down into the archives. The cellar. Ralph Conner hadn't been checked out since 1955! Read more...

John J. MacIsaac McDonald Jr. and Isabelle O'Brien

The MacIsaac family bible has John Isaac and Isabelle O'Brien marrying at St. Finnan's, Alexandria in 1859, no mention of month or day. Another possibly more accurate but unconfirmed source has John Isaac and Isabelle O'Brien married in 1860 Feb. 18, St. Finnan's. It's easy to see that John J. was at least twice Isabelle's age when they were married.

Picture Explained:

The eldest boy is Christena's father (Cornwall, Ont). The eldest girl is mom's cousin Mae from Ashland Wisc. Her son Allan (California) sent it to me this morning. The infant is Douglas Claire who died in the D-Day battle in France, One of the older boys died in WW1 and another was gassed but lived until 1962. One of their children is missing, she died at one year from measles, the rest lived until their 90s: 98, 97, 96, etc.!
How would you like to have had 16 children. Can you imagine getting them ready for the picture? We couldn't get 4 of you to co-operate!!

Details explained from Ranald J Macs wife's side: The MacRauri's

"The MacRauri's"

Some corrections from the original post.

from Christena:

Rory MacRauri the father of Margaret and Roseanne was killed in a fall from a barn roof at age 42. His daughter Roseanne was baptized as Rory Anne at St. Finnan's cathedral in Alexandria. There was no problem with her name and the church official. Her name may have been changed to Roseanne after her mother's grief over her husband's death eased or possibly Roseanne was teased at school because of her name. Ranald John, husband of her sister Margaret lived on the farm at lot 29 at Loch Garry which later became Apple Hill. Ranald John's brother Donald was a fireman in Ashland. Donald was prone to take serious risks on the job so Vincent removed him from that work. I had heard that Vincent was fire chief at that time, he was also custodian at a school and frequently made wooden furniture for that school. Mary Elizabeth Taylor (died February 1988 at age 98) was the grand daughter of Alexander MacIsaac MacDonald and Ellen MacMartin. Her obituary states that she helped Leroy Guldan write a book on the MacIsaac MacDonalds (1660 to 1969).

Always good to hear from you.
Christena.

from Marion MacDonald

Your Margaret McRauri married RJ. Her sister Roseanne McRauri married RJ's brother John Vincent. A little information on the sisters:
Margaret was born in January. That same year her father, Rory McRauri was killed in August probably felling trees or some such thing. In December that same year her sister Roseanne was born. They wanted her named Rory Anne McRauri but church officials as they are would not allow it, therefore she is Roseanne. The young family was on the main farm as Rory had been the oldest son. Upon his death they had to move off the farm and the second oldest brother take over the running of it which was the way of doing things in those days and indeed well into the 20th century in Scotland and Canada. These 2 girls obviously remained very close and kept contact all their lives because the information goes like this. RJ stayed on the farm in Greenfield and Roseanne's family moved to Ashland, Wisconsin where they had 9 children, Winston, Marybelle, Agnes, Angeline, Edgar, Louise, Louis, Joseph, Gifford. This may also help explain how RJ's son Donald ended up in Wisconsin as these sisters' families were double related with the fathers being brothers and the mothers being sisters.
