John J. MacIsaac McDonald Jr. and Isabelle O'Brien

The MacIsaac family bible has John Isaac and Isabelle O'Brien marrying at St. Finnan's, Alexandria in 1859, no mention of month or day. Another possibly more accurate but unconfirmed source has John Isaac and Isabelle O'Brien married in 1860 Feb. 18, St. Finnan's. It's easy to see that John J. was at least twice Isabelle's age when they were married.

Anne Isabelle (shown in picture) married Archibald J. MacDonald fondly known as Baldie (a widower with two children). Grandma Annie was known as Grandma Baldy :)

Annie is my great-grandmother, though she passed on earlier than my mother and her brothers got to meet their Grandma :-(

Anne Isabelle MacDonald marries Archibald J. MacDonald

Annie Baldy was a MacDonald from birth, and didn't even have to consider changing her name when she married. ;-)

John Archibald (Jack) City Prospector Tells of Ordeal
JohnArchibald-JackJohn Archibald --- A Vancouver prospector and his stricken partner were stranded without food or shelter in the wilds north of Norway House, Manitoba for seven days before rescue Friday. Howard Orcutt, 41, of 1928 West Eighth, said he and his partner had only matches to build a fire, and a drink of water every two hours. Orcutt, in a radiophone interview from Norway House, 300 miles north of Winnipeg, said his partner, 70 year old John MacDonald of Haney, was stricken with a mild heart attack on June 14, eight hours` walk from their base camp. "All I could do was just stay with him as long as I could," he said.
Fortunatley, said Orcutt, a note explaining their general location had been left in a tin can in the base camp on Lawford Lake, about 60 miles northeast of Norway House. The note was found Wednesday by a pilot who for the third day in succession, was trying to make a scheduled rendezvous with the pair. Bad weather then prevented search planes from going out, but finally RCMP rescue craft, bucking rain and high winds, found the pair. "The RCMP, deserve some real credit. Weather conditions were very bad. They took a real risk," Orcutt said. He said he lost about 15 pounds from his normal 185 weight, but is in good condition.
Orcutt said MacDonald is in satisfactory condition in hospital and may be released Monday to return to Vancouver. "It was a brand new experience," said Orcutt. He said he will return to their base camp for a week to 10 days and then return to Vancouver to his wife and seven children. Orcutt said he and MacDonald were prospecting for various minerals. Orcutt`s wife, Alma, said Friday night in Vancouver:"I`m so happy he is all right. I knew everything would work out all right. He`s no greenhorn to the business."

Sadie (Sarah Margaret) Angus (John Angus)

These photos of Aunt Sarah and Uncle Angus were taken circa 1917, or when Aunt Sarah (Sadie) was about 18 years old. After Aunt Sarah outlived two husbands she lived near or with Uncle Angus in Haney B.C. until his death in about 1980. (I visted them in 1979!)

Marie (Mary Isabel)
Marie-MaryIsabelMarie (Mary Isabel)

By the early 1960's Marie and Kenneth had settled in Elliot Lake Ontario. Elizabeth and Wayne were both married and Glenn was going to school in Toronto. It was an ideal location for grandchildren to visit and as the years unfolded I'm sure we all have great memories of wonderful weeks-on-end exploring the north and staying with Grandma and Grandpa.
Grandma didn't talk much about the old-days, we had to wait until Aunt Sadie was visiting to hear what life in Apple Hill had been like.
I'm not sure of the dates when (Great-)Grandma Annie Baldie and her young family moved Marie and her younger siblings to Winnipeg, but it apparently had to do with (Great-)Grandpa Baldie's passing on and the fact there were still young children at home.
Marie didn't marry until her early 30's. I never heard much about life in Winnipeg during the depression except that they were the only family on the block with a telephone.
Marie and Kenneth married in Winnipeg and eventually re-located to Kirkland Lake Ontario, with their first two children. There were some pretty remote locations on the way, but nobody talks much about back-woods-roughing it in those days, as if it was a bad thing. Today, we would probably call it a great adventure! I wish now, that I had asked more questions!
